12 Years in the Aroostook Cluster

 

  

 

In the beginning, I occasionally met the lay leaders and pastors of our nine churches through my husband. The foundation of our Cluster was built upon the gentle leadership of my husband, Victor, who served as the Cluster Leader, alongside the precise and timely minutes reported by Sue Brown, the dedicated service of Paula Lilley as our Treasurer, and the love and devotion of Retired Elder Mary Miller, who served as a bridge connecting our individual congregations.

The close, cross-regional friendship between Mary Miller, Sue Brown, and Paula Lilley, in particular, transformed our group into a community that truly loves and cares for one another. Through our monthly Zoom meetings, we share the Word, brainstorm mission ideas to help our local communities, and lift up our prayer requests together.

Twice a year, we hold Leadership Picnics, and in the spring and fall, we gather for Cluster Worship services. Through these events and our regular springtime Pulpit Exchanges—where pastors rotate to preach at different churches—we have learned to embrace the entire county beyond our own individual steeples. When a church lacked a preacher, we helped; when floods caused damage, we raised funds and prayed together. We stood side-by-side through the challenges of COVID-19 and the pain of denominational division. Specifically, during the two and a half years when Patten UMC was without a pastor, Mary and Paula ensured the church remained strong; in fact, the congregation grew during that time.


Through God’s providence, as Patten joined Houlton, Hodgdon, and Mars Hill in a shared ministry, our capacity for collaborative work expanded. Last year’s Cluster VBS was a resounding success because leaders from every church put their heads together and prepared with wisdom and prayer. We gave thanks that by joining forces, we could accomplish what no single church could do alone.

Sharing ministry ideas led us to discover Gray Memorial UMC’s Pen Pal Ministry. Seeing their beautiful model of church members and high school students exchanging letters twice a month—providing both emotional and spiritual nourishment—inspired us. My husband and I adopted this idea for our four churches, starting a Pen Pal program between children and nursing home residents. It has become a ministry where the writers, the recipients, and the deliverers all joyfully experience God.

Every Christmas, our nine churches decorate a tree for the St. Apollonia Festival of Trees to help children in need of dental care; last year, we raised $2,000. In this way, God has led us beyond being small, individual churches to become one "Great Church" serving the community through mission, ministry, and worship.

Above all, our combined worship services have been unforgettable moments moved by the Holy Spirit. During last year’s Thanksgiving service, we experienced true unity through a Music Festival featuring the diverse talents of each congregation. And today, during our two-hour service with the Bishop, time seemed to stand still. Between the bell choirs from two churches, Ben’s children’s message, the combined choirs, the worship dance from four churches, and Holy Communion, we truly experienced a glimpse of heaven on earth.

I will never forget the immense love I have received here. Wherever we go, we will carry and share the lessons we learned here about how to love and how to be loved.

처음에는 남편을 통해 아홉 개 교회의 평신도 대표들과 목사님들을 이따금 만나는 것으로 인연이 시작되었습니다. 클러스터장으로 섬겨 온 남편 빅터(Victor)의 부드러운 리더십, 슈 브라운(Sue Brown)의 정확하고 신속한 회의록 보고, 그리고 폴라 릴리(Paula Lilley)의 헌신적인 회계 봉사가 우리 모임의 든든한 뼈대가 되었습니다. 무엇보다 개교회의 울타리를 넘어 각 교회의 다리가 되어 주신 은퇴 장로 목사 메리 밀러(Mary Miller)의 사랑과 헌신은 이 모든 사역의 소중한 바탕이 되었습니다.

특히 메리 밀러, 슈 브라운, 폴라 릴리 세 분이 보여준 지역을 초월한 친밀한 유대감은 우리 모임을 서로를 깊이 사랑하고 돌보는 공동체로 만들어 주었습니다. 우리는 매달 한 번씩 '줌(Zoom)'을 통해 만나 말씀을 나누고, 지역 사회를 돕기 위한 선교 아이디어와 기도 제목을 나누며 동역해 왔습니다.

또한, 1년에 두 번 열리는 '리더십 피크닉', 봄과 가을의 '클러스터 연합 예배', 그리고 오랫동안 이어온 '강단 교류(Pulpit Exchange)'를 통해 목회자들이 서로의 교회를 방문하며 설교를 나누었습니다. 이러한 과정을 통해 우리는 개교회의 경계를 넘어 카운티(County) 전체를 가슴에 품게 되었습니다. 설교자가 부족한 교회가 있으면 기꺼이 서로를 도왔고, 홍수 피해를 입었을 때는 마음을 모아 후원하며 함께 기도했습니다. 팬데믹의 고통과 교단의 분열이라는 어려운 시기도 우리는 늘 함께했기에 이겨낼 수 있었습니다.

특히 패튼(Patten) 교회가 2년 반 동안 담임 목회자가 부재했을 때, 메리와 폴라의 헌신 덕분에 교회가 흔들림 없이 설 수 있었고, 오히려 그 기간에 교회가 성장하는 기적을 경험하기도 했습니다. 이후 하나님의 예비하심 속에 패튼 교회가 훌턴(Houlton), 호지던(Hodgdon), 마스 힐(Mars Hill) 교회와 연합 사역을 시작하게 되면서 우리는 더 많은 일들을 함께할 수 있었습니다. 작년 클러스터 여름 성경학교(VBS)는 준비 과정부터 각 교회 리더들이 지혜를 모으고 기도로 준비한 덕분에 매우 성공적이었습니다. 작은 개교회로서는 하기 힘든 일들을 '큰 교회'라는 이름으로 힘을 모아 해낼 수 있음에 깊이 감사드리는 시간이었습니다.

사역의 아이디어를 나누는 과정에서 '그레이 메모리얼(Gray Memorial) UMC'의 펜팔 사역 소식을 듣게 되었습니다. 교인들과 고등학생들이 한 달에 두 번씩 편지를 주고받으며 정서적, 영적 공급을 나누는 아름다운 모습에 큰 영감을 얻었습니다. 이를 바탕으로 현재 저와 남편이 담당하는 네 교회는 요양원 어르신들과 어린이들이 함께하는 펜팔 사역을 이어가고 있습니다. 편지를 쓰는 이와 받는 이, 그리고 이를 전달하는 모든 이가 행복하게 하나님을 경험하는 귀한 통로가 되었습니다.

또한 아홉 개 교회는 매년 크리스마스마다 '세인트 아폴로니아(St. Apollonia)' 트리를 꾸미며 치과 치료가 필요한 아이들을 돕고 있습니다. 작년에는 2,000달러의 성금이 모이기도 했습니다. 이처럼 하나님께서는 우리를 작은 개교회에 머물게 하지 않으시고, 하나의 큰 공동체로서 지역 사회를 돕는 선교와 사역, 예배를 감당하게 하셨습니다.

그중에서도 함께 모여 드리는 연합 예배는 늘 성령님의 잊지 못할 감동이 있었습니다. 작년 추수감사절 예배 때는 각 교회의 음악적 재능을 나누는 '뮤직 페스티벌'을 통해 우리가 하나임을 깊이 경험했습니다. 특히 오늘 비숍과 함께 드린 예배는 두 시간이라는 긴 시간 동안 진행되었음에도 시간 가는 줄 모를 만큼 은혜로웠습니다. 두 교회의 벨 콰이어, 벤(Ben)의 어린이 설교, 연합 성가대와 네 교회의 워십 댄스, 그리고 성만찬에 이르기까지, 우리는 이 땅에서 천국의 기쁨을 미리 맛보았습니다.

이곳에서 받은 과분한 사랑을 결코 잊지 못할 것입니다. 이곳에서 배운 '사랑하는 법'과 '사랑받는 법'을 앞으로 어디에 있든 널리 전하겠습니다.
