My Call and Our Call to Nursing Home by Roberta Finnmore

Image
Nursing home service every third Sunday  at the Gardiner Stetson Memorial UMC 8.24.25 My name is Roberta Adams Moore—though some know me as Roberta Finnemore. I was born in 1940 in Patten, Maine, and I’ve lived a long life by God’s grace. Even now, at 85, I see that God still has work for me to do. These days, I live in a nursing home. Some might think that’s the end of ministry, but for me, it’s just a new beginning. God has opened doors here for His work. It started with small things—devotionals every morning with Wendy and Sharon. We prayed, sang, and studied God’s Word together. When Wendy moved on, I wanted to keep learning, so we asked Pastor Joyce and Houlton UMC to lead a Bible study every Friday. And now, every third week, we have a Sunday service right here in the nursing home. Through all of this, I feel part of Houlton UMC, even though I am far from my home church. Pastor Joyce once told me that I was like Moses in the nursing home. That touched my heart deepl...

“I Love to Tell the Story” by Roberta Finnemore

My name is Roberta Adams Moore—though some know me as Roberta Finnemore—and I was born in 1940 in Patten, Maine. I'm 85 years old now, and I’ve lived a full and colorful life, by God’s grace. I was the eldest of four children, born to Robert and Minnie Adams. My mother made sure we went to Sunday school starting at age five. Every Sunday, we were there at the United Methodist Church in Patten—a beautiful old church where faith felt alive. Pastor Herman Grant, a graduate of Patten Academy like I was, led us for a time. A quiet man, but wise. He once told me, when I was just sixteen and teaching a third-grade Sunday school class, “Maybe there’s something more they need than just the books of the Bible.” I took his words to heart, but I never forgot those books—and I still know them by heart to this day. That tiny classroom, just an old entryway no one used anymore, was packed with twelve boys and one girl. If you could’ve seen it, you wouldn’t have believed it. I started teaching whe...

Laos Sunday School Mission

Image
Dear friends of the Aroostook Cluster, Greetings from Laos! We are so grateful for your prayers and partnership. Knowing that we are supported by your love and faith gives us the strength to serve here each day. The religious landscape in our country is unique. We are part of an unregistered denomination and must be very careful in our ministry. Most of the over 60 churches here are small house churches, and in many of them, the children have no dedicated space or teachers for Sunday school. Our team has a clear plan to address this. This year, we are creating our own Sunday school curriculum and running a pilot program in three of our city churches. Our hope is that by next year, we will begin training local teachers and helping rural churches set up their own Sunday school programs from the ground up, providing them with the basic supplies they need. The overall educational environment here is very poor, but we know our God is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine. ...

The Second Week of August

Shalom! It's been a hot week! My family spent our Sabbath at Shin Falls, another one of Maine's hidden gems. We fell in love with the view, and the water was so warm from the hot weather—it felt like a body-temperature embrace. As we floated, we couldn't hear anything but the sound of the waterfall pouring into the water around us. May God give us living waters day by day! I hope we are all hydrated with those living waters. This Week's Sermon Here is a link to this past Sunday's sermon, "From Insider to Outsider": Read the Sermon And you can watch the full service here: Watch the Service Prayer Requests Please join me in praying for: Cluster VBS 2025: For good weather and safety. For the 14 adult volunteers, 7 youth, and 20 children to grow closer to God and to one another. The family of Steve Yets, who passed away yesterday. Blessings, Joyce

The First Week of August

The First Combined Women's Retreat in Houlton, Hodgdon, Mars Hill, & Patten UMC    Peace be with you all! God is good! All the time! United in the Spirit I can't believe it, but last Sunday, all four of our churches read Psalm 121, and the three pastors didn't even coordinate with each other! Victor and I didn't even know we were using the same sermon picture. It's truly amazing—we are all united in one Spirit! I believe there is a reason for the Han family to be serving four churches while our denomination and the New England conference are pursuing a "Cooperative Ministry." Aroostook County has so many strengths that support this ministry. We are all connected, and we need each other! Administrative Meeting & Combined Service Last Sunday, our Administrative Council met (minutes are attached). Even with a small group, we made a big decision: we voted to hold a  combined Sunday service with our sister churches on every fifth Sunday! This month, we...
